DIY: How to Make Baby Lotion for Sensitive Skin

In our experience, we find most people don't even think about moisturising until the autumn/winter time when temperatures begin to dip and our skin starts drying out. But here at Nimble, we think skin - and especially delicate baby skin - deserves a bit of love all year round!

With this in mind, we thought we’d share one of our all-time favourite DIY recipes with you: here’s how to make baby lotion for sensitive skin- using natural ingredients.

Why make your own baby lotion?

Here at Nimble HQ, we’re passionate about creating only the best cleaning products, utilising natural ingredients that are kind to our baby’s sensitive skin. We know only too well that whatever comes into contact with our baby’s skin needs to be as gentle as possible, so reaching for natural skincare remedies is always a priority.

Our children mean a lot to us! As parents, we want to make sure they’re safe, happy and comfortable- and we’re proud that our entire range reflects that. An extension of this goes to their skincare! And it doesn’t need to be difficult, either. Read on to find out how you can easily make baby lotion for sensitive skin at home.

What you need to make DIY baby lotion

  • 65g Organic Shea Butter

  • 30g Organic Coconut Oil

  • 1 tablespoon Organic Aloe Vera Gel

  • 5 drops of Cedarwood Essential Oil

  • 5 drops of Lavender Essential Oil

A word on the ingredients…

We love Shea Butter because it’s so rich in vitamin A, E and F and offers natural UV protection. Shea Butter is also very rich in essential fatty acids, which the skin loves, and it makes an excellent base for this baby lotion. As for coconut oil, you might already know that this is a favourite ingredient here at Nimble Babies! It’s gentle, nourishing and oh-so moisturising, and gentle on the skin, so it compliments the Shea Butter well.

This recipe also uses Aloe Vera Gel, which has many long-standing health benefits, one of which is its ability to help heal wounds and irritations. If your baby is suffering from dry skin or other minor skin conditions, this is an incredibly great addition to the lotion.

And finally, the essential oils. Cedarwood is an incredible essential oil to use in this particular baby lotion, not only because it smells so lovely! Cedarwood essential oil is known to have antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, which again help heal wounds and minor skin irritations- so it works well with the Aloe Vera Gel.

And we probably don’t need to say much about the lavender essential oil, as its calming properties are very well known! Lots of you probably already use it to help create a relaxing atmosphere around the home. We love using this baby lotion after bath time, just before bed!

How to make it

One of the very best things about this DIY baby lotion recipe is that it’s very easy to make. There are many recipes out there, and many of them can be quite labour intensive- and if there’s one thing we know, most parents don’t have the luxury of ‘plenty of time’ to make their lotion. If you want something quick and easy, this one is for you!

All you need is a hand mixer, a spatula and a bowl.

  • Add the Shea Butter to the bowl and whip on high power for one minute

  • Add the coconut oil and Aloe Vera Gel, then whip for another 30 seconds

  • Scrape the sides of the bowl with the spatula, then mix again on medium as you add the essential oils.

Store your lotion in a glass jar either at room temperature (will keep for three months) or in the fridge (will keep for six months).
