The Little Things to Make Mum Smile this Mother's Day

They say it’s the small things in life that matter, and if living through a global pandemic has taught us anything, this sentiment is oh so very true. We’re all parents here at Nimble HQ too, and we’ve been struggling through the lockdowns with you. We know it’s not been easy trying to juggle it all - babies, toddlers, homeschooling, housework, work-work— the list is endless, and it can feel thankless.

That’s why we wanted to celebrate Mother’s Day in a slightly different way this year. Yes, it’s nice to receive gifts, flowers, chocolates, but sometimes a homemade card and lovingly drawn pictures make the most perfect gift of all! It really can be the little things that make mum’s day, rather than the big gestures we might feel we need to perform. Here’s a quick list of the little things you can do this weekend to make Mother’s Day 2021 special.

Tidy up!

You know we like a nice, orderly home (the clues are all there!), and we’re strong advocates for making the housework a team effort rather than the sole responsibility of one person. Maybe getting the little ones involved in some age-appropriate housework could be one way that you show appreciation. Bonus points if you can convince the small people to keep it up beyond this weekend!

Cherish special memories

One of the best things about being a parent has to be celebrating the milestones as your babies grow and find their feet in the world - first smile, first tooth, first steps - all such special memories to cherish. If you have time, create a collage of photos for mum to reminisce over this weekend. It can be an album on your phone or a good old-fashioned photo album with prints - the thought counts for this one, however, it’s presented.

Home-made for the win

Making gifts and cards at home is a sure-fire way to make mum’s day this year- not because your children might be genius with a crayon, but because just taking the time to create means so much more. Receiving a card that your little one has made for you is right up there with the best when it comes to emotional highs.

Laughter is the best medicine

So we can’t exactly go out for a night at the comedy clubs right now, but we can create our own sunshine and laughter at home. By now, we should all be experts on DIY at-home experiences! So play her favourite romantic comedy, dig out the game that always makes her smile, or compose your best knock-knock jokes. Because, let’s face it, a good belly laugh will always be appreciated!

At home spa day

Until we can visit the real thing, at-home spa days could be on the agenda, too, with a little bit of planning. Run a gorgeous bubble bath, light some candles (keep the kids away for this one!) and just let her relax for as long as she likes before the kids invade! Trust us; mum will gratefully receive this, especially if you can keep the little ones out of the tub for longer than usual.

Three simple words

Sometimes, all it takes to make mum’s day is to let her know you love her. Despite only just starting to ease out of lockdown, life is still rather busy for us all, and sometimes we can forget to let the people around us know how much they mean to us. Don’t let the day pass without letting mum know just how special she is.
